Franchhoek; In 1685, after the Protestant religion became
outlawed in France, 300 Huguenots arrived at the Cape of Good Hope.
They chose this valley as their new home which was then filled
with roaming elephants and called “Oliphantshoek”.
The valley has now become one of the premier wine growing areas situated
in the heart of the Cape Winelands and is known as South Africa’s
very own “French Corner.” Surrounded by breathtaking views
of awe inspiring mountains and vineyards, Franschhoek has become world
renowned in recent years as a hot-spot for the jet-set and boasts acclaimed
restaurants, hotels and wine estates. The picturesque village emits proud,
ever-present memories of a 17 th century French Huguenot culture.
