Stellenbosch in the Western Cape
Winelands is surrounded
by towering mountains and vineyard lined hills. Stellenbosch is
the oldest town in South Africa, founded in 1679 by Simon van der
Stel. With it’s
fertile soils the Dutch East Indian Company intended to grow vegetables
in the valley to supply the ships en route to the East Indies.
The first farmers settled on the Eerste river in 1683. Cape-Dutch
architecture developed through the ages as the most distinctive.
The first colonialists were from the Netherlands, Germany, France
and later Britain. The early towns-folk were encouraged to plant
oak trees and therefore Stellenbosch became known as the “Eikestad” – town
of oaks. Stellenbosch has developed into a university town with
the growth in recognition of the University of Stellenbosch as
one of the world’s
pre-eminent learning institutions. As a result Stellenbosch has
developed a lively and vibrant atmosphere. Stellenbosch today has
more than 600 farms and 123 wine cellars producing world renowned
wines of all types and styles. The dramatically beautiful environment,
street cafes, restaurants, mountain trails, plethora of outdoor
pursuits (hiking, fishing, horse riding), wine estates and nearby
access to some of the Cape’s
best beaches makes Stellenbosch an idyllic place to live.
